Meet the Committee

Yvonne

Yvonne I am involved with aLBa because there is a need to have an organization where lesbians can feel safe, relaxed and network with all different people and skills. When asked to be on the committee at the third meeting I was apprehensive but soon realize that there was a need for such group to come together on a regular basis.

I am a 3rd year Student at Auckland studying BA Social Practices and am looking forward to complete the degree and being out in the work force.

Megan

Megan I became a committee member in September 07, after receiving the email that new members for the committee were required, or aLBa was in danger of closing. I had attended some meetings over the preceding few years, but while I didn't attend regularly it was always nice to know that aLBa was there, so I figured it was time for me to do my bit! I'm really glad I did join up, because I have loads of fun and meeting a lot of new people as a result.

I'm currently self employed as a Software Development Manager, specializing in Business Analysis, Software Testing and Project Management.

Kathleen

Kathleen I appreciate the support that aLBa has given me over the years, its a good place to socialise and meet new people, hear stimulating speakers, find out whats happening and even to play the occasional game!! So as I said in September 07 when things were looking a bit shaky, I thought it was time I did my bit to support aLBa by joining the committee.

I've been really impressed with how old and new committee members have worked together, at times at speed, for example, when needing to find a new venue with less than a week to go to the March meeting. Plus we've got the chance to update some things - like the logo - and to have a website. So they're stimulating times.

I work for myself as a planner, policy analyst and facilitator, mainly for the public sector. I'm also interested in transport and sustainability issues.

Wendy

Alba is unique in that it is one of the few successful lesbian organisations to have survived for over five years. I have enjoyed being able to contribute by being on the committee for the past four years and to have had the opportunity to form close working/friendship relationships. It's great fun, informative, provides a place for us to be and is a fertile meeting ground!

I have a small business (homeco interiors) providing a service to clients who seek advice when refurbishing or creating new interior spaces, working mainly in areas such as colour, lighting (interior and landscape) and furnishing packages.

Jilly

Jilly I have been involved in Early Childhood Education for all of my working life. I started as a kindergarten teacher for many years and was active in the union during that time to advocate for better quality education in the early years, including better funding. We have now got there and I am now working for the Ministry of Education managing the early childhood work in the Northern Region.

Nancy

Nancy I decided to join aLBa in Sept. 07 after hearing that it might close if new committee members were not found. aLBa has been an important place for me during the past few years and the concept of it not existing for our community when we need it was all it took to convince me to sign on. I continue to enjoy aLBa and hope that we manage to bring a lot of new faces on board this year!

I am a mother of two, I teach gifted children and also am a personal trainer.

Lisa

Lisa I am a strong supporter of lesbian businesswomen and enterprise. So, when I heard aLBa needed people to help keep the organisation afloat, I naturally volunteered. I'm proud to be able to assist Auckland's primary lesbian business organisation - there's no better place for lesbians to socialise, exchange ideas and network!

I am a senior lawyer at Holmes Dangen & Associates in Auckland City.

Linde

Linde I first joined the Alba Committee in September '06 after attending several of the monthly meetings. Initially I took on the Secretary role before becoming the Alba Treasurer in May '07. I am enjoying being part of team of interesting and talented women committed to a business and networking organisation for lesbian women.

In my working life I am a Health Professional with my own practice in Auckland.

Fiona

Fiona I joined the Committee in September 2007, having attended only one meeting. A colleague encouraged me to join the committee, and as I had only just discovered ALBA I certainly didn't want to see it fold. I'm really pleased to be doing my bit and have had a great time on the committee and at meetings. It has been a fabulous way to meet a range of people from really diverse backgrounds. I am a policy analyst with a central government agency, with a background in environment, transport and urban policy and local government.
